About Massoud

Massoud Hayoun is an multilingual, investigative, award-winning journalist currently based in Los Angeles. He was most recently a reporter and part-time editor for Al Jazeera America’s website.

Before that, Massoud worked for for news organizations including Agence France-Presse (AFP), The Atlantic, the Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post (南华早报), CNN and China’s Economic Observer (经济观察报).

He speaks four languages and has reported from Asia, Africa and the Middle East as well as across the United States, from the Navajo Nation to Galveston, Texas to Danvers, Massachusetts. He is a generalist, but he is especially interested in investigative and business reporting.

Massoud won a 2015 Editor and Publisher EPPY award together with an Al Jazeera America team for a series on a Chinese businessman’s bid to build a canal through Nicaragua. For his part of the series, he wrote an investigative business profile of the businessman and how the project would affect Hong Kong’s holdings in the Panama Canal.

The same year, two of his investigative series for Al Jazeera America on business deals between Chinese politician-entrepreneurs accused of corruption and high-profile Republican politicians were finalists for the EPPY business reporting award against The Wall Street Journal and Canada’s Globe and Mail.

Massoud was invited to speak about his journalism at an Arab economic development forum in Amman, Jordan in 2012, and in March 2016, the University of North Carolina, Charlotte invited him to talk about his work and international economic development as a guest lecturer.

Massoud obtained a bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in East Asian Studies, Political Science and French. He graduated Summa Cum Laude and is a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Society, the U.S.’s oldest honor society. He earned a master’s degree from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism.
